Marketing Magic From Paranormal Author Sadie Jacks

Marketing Magic From Paranormal Author Sadie Jacks

Networking with other writers through conferences and social media has helped me to hone my own marketing strategy. I met Paranormal Romance writer Sadie Jacks in a Facebook writer’s group. I loved her energy and willingness to share tips with other writers.

“Marketing is one of the single most important investments I’ve made,” Sadie said. “And all of the investment has been time. My book sales have been great. I make enough sales that I could quit my full-time jobs and live very comfortably.”

Who is Sadie Jacks?
Sadie is the author of the Iron Serpent Chronicles, a reverse harem paranormal romance series. The main character of these books is Kiema Feuer, a magical healer in a world that supposedly has no magic. Held captive by her parents so they could capitalize on her gifts, she finally decides to escape–even if that means dying.

I started reading the first book in the series, Caged Magic, and I was hooked despite the fact that I am not a fan of this genre. I was impressed with her writing. But, even great book is not necessarily a top seller. What did Sadie do to get more than 100 reviews and top sales?

Sadie’s Secrets
#1 Write to Market
Most writers write the book and then analyze the market. In Sadie’s second go-around with self-publishing, she did the reverse. She researched the market and wrote what people were looking to read before she started writing. This method is unconventional for most writers but Sadie wanted to be sure there was a market for her books before she invested the time in writing and self-publishing them.

Amazon categories are one place an author can look to see what people are reading. The “Paranormal Romance,” category is really hot right now with people looking to buy books in this genre.

#2 Rapid Release Strategy
All five books in the Iron Serpents Chronicles are written and Sadie plans to release them all this year one month apart. Her first book, Caged Magic, got more than 100 reviews and pushed the sale of the other books. Once readers became hooked they wanted more. Her strategy only had her fans wait 30 days for the next book to be released in the series. An advantage of this rapid release strategy is momentum. Writers can provide teasers and links to other books in the series to keep readers.

#3 Give the Your Book Away for Free… at least in the beginning
As a new author, Sadie realized that readers might be reluctant to spend money on her books. She overcame that obstacle by working with an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) team, giving them free books in exchange for honest reviews. This strategy resulted in her getting more than 100 reviews.

#4 Take part in Author TakeOvers
I didn’t know what an Author TakeOver or what is termed TO was before Sadie educated me. Author TakeOvers are when one author allows another author to market to their Facebook group. Sadie started her own group, Sadie’s Seekers and used it to attract the attention of other authors and readers.

“Author-Takeovers are usually mutually beneficial for Taker/Hoster,” Sadie said. “TO is the biggest sales booster I’ve ever had. And it’s completely free. I’ve spent $0 on advertising.”

#5 Engage with Readers
Sadie describes herself as an introvert but you would never know that it if you follow her page. She takes every opportunity to engage with readers.

“As a very highly introverted person, I have found that I absolutely LOVE talking to my readers,” Sadie said. “They have some of the best stories. And when they choose a ‘book boyfriend’ who came from my imagination? The best. Just like any other endeavor in life, you have to engage (and appreciate) the people who make it possible for you to do what you love.”
