Would You Date Across Party Lines?❤️

Would You Date Across Party Lines?❤️

This topic came to me after I was speaking with a man I was interested in. When he found out how I was voting he ridiculed me and told me that I needed to read. This reaction was so unexpected. Up until that we had that conversation things had been cool with us. We never really got a chance to hang out because of the Covid-19 restrictions. I know now that we will not be going out.

I am not mad that he is of a different political affiliation, I am mad because he scoffed at my ideals. I can’t recall a time when I asked a person that I was interested in what party they were affiliated with. My parents didn’t vote for the same political party and I don’t recall any issue with that in their marriage. This situation made me think about what I feel is important when I start to meet someone new. Political affiliation wouldn’t be in my first ten things to ask.

The United States is polarized right now. Families are breaking apart because of their political beliefs. This is all so sad. We should be able to form our own opinions. My mentor, Shirley Hackett, used to always say, “You should be able to disagree without being disagreeable.” He has been gone a long time now, however, his words still ring true.

When I think of my ideal partner, mutual respect is right near the top. When two people get together, there is always some issue they will not agree on, that is just basic human nature. What I cannot tolerate, is the blatant disrespect and ridicule. I show respect and I want to be respected in return.

I have many friends whom I love and associate with who are not of the same political affiliation. These people love and support me. I think the old saying is true, “Never discuss religion or politics.” I would add to that and say that you should never discuss religion or politics with people who can’t understand multiple viewpoints.

My personal viewpoint is that party affiliation would not deter me from dating someone as long as they respected my views and didn’t belittle me.

I would love to hear if any of the readers of this blog have dated across party lines and what that experience has been like.
