War Room-Movie Spotlight
Sometimes it feels like we are in a war. Many of us have been stuck in our homes for weeks. We are required to wear masks in public. There are constant debates on how and when businesses and schools should open in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. In these troubling times, more people are turning to prayer.
That’s why I was delighted to catch War Room on cable television. This movie is about how the power of prayer can be a game-changer. I was drawn to this film because I find myself praying and reading the Bible more. This movie is on DVD, or you can tune into BET Her on Saturday, May 2 (check local listings for times). I purchased the DVD and enjoyed the add-ons that include inspirational stories, a blooper reel, and interviews.
War Room Movie Synopsis
Prayer helped Clara Johnson, played by Karen Abercrombie, through some difficult times. This passionate, prayer-warrior has made it her mission to teach others using the weapon of warfare through prayer. Abercrombie’s performance as the feisty grandmother determined to teach another young woman her pray strategies really makes this movie. She mentors her real estate agent Elizabeth Jordan, played by Priscilla Shirer, how to pray and to surrender all situations to God.
On the outside, Elizabeth has it all. She lives in a gorgeous house, has a sexy successful husband and a cute daughter but, there is trouble brewing. Tony, played by T.C. Stallings is cocky, unappreciative, and looking to find affection outside their marriage. It becomes painfully apparent that Elizabeth, too self-absorbed with her problems, is not connecting to her daughter Danielle, played by Alena Pitts.
Elizabeth has removed everything from her closet and dedicates this space to prayer. Every day she prays in her closet and tapes her prayer requests on the walls. Eventually, everything comes to a head and Tony discovers the prayer closet. At first, he is suspicious. At the beginning of the movie the couple communicates through fighting however, when Elizabeth starts praying she relinquishes arguing and allows God to do the fighting for her. She is calmer and supportive of her family. This change in attitude and behavior forces Tony to examine himself.
Using Prayers as a Weapon
Elizabeth is like so many of us who try to fix things on our own. This begs the question “How is that working for you?” I can tell you how that was working for me and Elizabeth in one word. Terrible. It is only when Elizabeth surrenders all her troubles over to God through prayer that her life turns around. Her weekly meetings with Clara teaches her to pray and make time for God. I think we could all learn something from the powerful lessons in this film.
