Review of New Dance New Life by Sentheia McLeod✊🏿

It is not easy to heal from childhood trauma however Sentheia McLeod, the dance director at the Cathedral International in Perth Amboy, NJ under the direction of Bishop Donald Hilliard Jr. who is the senior pastor, has proved that faith can oversome any obstacle. In her memoir New Dance New Life (available on Amazon) she details what it was like to grow up with an alcoholic mother and an absentee father. There were many times in her young life that she went hungry and she didn’t always have proper clothes to wear. The light in her life, was the Joy Bus Ministry that came every week to take undeservedv youth in Highland Park to church. It was there that she found God and from that time on her life moved in a more positive trajectory.

As a child of alcoholics, Sentheia realized when she became an adult that she struggled with low self-esteem and had trust issues. Many times when children live in alcoholic environment they aren’t always given the best care. Sentheia recalled days when her hair wasn’t done, a counselor told her she would be an alcoholic like her mother, and she was teased in school. These experiences have made her a more caring and thoughtful teacher, a career she has had for 30 years. She says in her book one of her greatest joys is when student returns to saty thank you.

This book is very inspiring and I would recommend for teen and young adult readers.

Sentheia holds a BA in Early Childhood Education and Psychology, and a MA in Advanced Curriculum and Teaching from Kean University in Union, NJ. She also has a MA in Worship and Liturgical Dance from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, NJ.
