Author Interview: Talking About Frankie and the Peanut Butter and Jelly Fiasco
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down for an interview with Jewel Scott from So Booking Cool. Jewel is such a thoughtful interviewer and asked great questions about my journey as a writer and the inspiration behind my new children’s picture book, Frankie and the Peanut Butter and Jelly Fiasco.
We first met at a New York Association of Black Journalists event, where we both are members, so it was wonderful to reconnect in this way.
Why I Wrote Frankie and the Peanut Butter and Jelly Fiasco
This story was born out of my love for creating fun and meaningful experiences for children. As a former substitute teacher, I’ve had the joy of working with many students, and I’ve always been inspired by their curiosity and eagerness to learn.
I wanted to write a book that parents and caregivers could read over and over with their little ones—something playful yet purposeful. Kids today spend so much time with screens, so I aimed to create a screen-free activity that encourages hands-on learning.
In the book, children not only enjoy Frankie’s hilarious peanut butter and jelly adventure, but they’re also encouraged to try making their own sandwich! Plus, I felt it was important to make the book accessible to more families, so there’s also a Spanish-language edition available.
Sharing My Story with the Community
Promoting a book has its challenges, but it’s also filled with wonderful opportunities. I’ve been blessed to host storytime events at the Fanwood Public Library and the Plainfield Public Library, and I even had a chance to read with kids at a summer school and camp program.
Next, I’ll be heading to a school in Newark, New Jersey, and I’m looking forward to introducing Frankie to even more young readers.
